1. Share with employees your company goals and vision, and how their contributions fit in
Every department, team, and role works in tandem to help your company achieve its goals and align with its vision. But when employees are completing their projects or tasks, it’s very easy to lose sight of the big picture and feel like a useless cog in a larger machine. The solution? Easy. Whether through one-to-one check-ins or a company-wide annual conference, you should spell out clearly the correlation between their efforts and the outcome.
2. Tap into employees’ strengths to solve challenging issues or projects
“Everybody is a genius. But if you Judge a fish by Its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” – Albert Einstein
When assigning tasks and projects, make sure you consider the strengths and weaknesses of each employee. Set up teams so that employees complement each other, and assign individual employees the tasks that play to their strengths. Not only will this set them up for success, but it’ll also motivate employees. After all, it’s no surprise that employees enjoy doing tasks that relate to their strengths.
Pro tip: Assigning employees tasks that play to their strengths doesn’t always mean giving them easy work, as this can more often than not backfire and end up demotivating employees. Feeling challenged and stimulated is likewise important, as long as there’s the much-needed support to stay motivated during difficult tasks.
3. Promote internally to deserving employees, and make sure they’re aware of these opportunities
Nothing causes demotivation more than feeling stagnated. If your employees are capable and have been with the company long enough, not being promoted can make them feel like their contributions are not recognized. So make sure you promote internally, and that employees are aware of this fact. You can even go a step further to prepare employees who want to move up through one-to-one mentorship or by supporting professional development.
Pro tip: Don’t penalize employees working remotely or those who request flexible working arrangements when it comes to promotional opportunities. This will decrease motivation because employees aren’t judged for their capabilities but simply for physical presence in the office, and can even hamper your diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
4. Show employees you value them through reward and recognition
When employees feel valued, they feel motivated. While a small ‘thank you’ may sometimes do the trick, what better way to show employees that you value and appreciate them other than by providing rewards? Consider the tasks and how much work went into them before deciding on an appropriate reward. It could be a team dinner, getting your employees some chocolates, or even half the day off on a Friday.

5. Provide comprehensive employee benefits that meet employees’ needs
Another fantastic way to show employees you value them and increase employee motivation is to provide comprehensive employee benefits – especially ones that address their health and wellbeing because it shows employees you truly care about them. From a group health insurance plan and employee assistance programs (EAPs) to flexible working arrangements and beyond, there are a number of benefits you can provide.
